        For the AR advertising campaign promoting the cinematic release of Five Nights at Freddy’s, we collaborated with Wakefield:XR to create optimized, animated 3D characters and environments for a new social AR experience. The project was produced for Universal Pictures and designed to deliver fast, high-impact horror moments directly to fans.

        We love a technical challenge – especially when it involves bringing iconic cinematic characters into the hands of fans. Wakefield:XR managed the project end-to-end and brought us in to help craft one of the most critical pieces of the experience: high-quality, real-time-ready 3D assets.

    <h2>The Challenge</h2>
    <p>The campaign’s goal was to use an immersive AR experience to pull fans directly into the world of Five Nights at Freddy’s and build hype around the movie release. Instead of a generic filter, the experience recreated the feeling of being inside the arcade and security rooms from the film – with flickering lights, worn‑out machines, and that unsettling feeling of being watched.
</p>
	<p>From our side, the challenge was technical and creative:</p>
    <ul class="customSteps">
        <li>Rebuild key locations from the movie – from the arcade area to the darker back rooms – so they instantly feel familiar to fans and set up the tension for a jump scare.
        </li>
        <li>Bring the animatronics to life with close‑range AR animations that feel like they’re stepping out of the FNAF universe and into the player’s physical space.
        </li>
        <li>Aggressively optimize geometry, textures, and materials so the entire scene – characters plus environment – runs smoothly on social AR, without losing the grimy, horror‑movie atmosphere that makes the experience believable.
        </li>
    </ul>
	<p>The goal was not just to show a character in AR, but to briefly place the user inside the FNAF space, long enough for the scare to land and the movie announcement to stick.</p>

    <h2>The AR Experience</h2>
    <p>
       Together with Wakefield:XR we designed an experience where fans could receive a randomized jump scare from one of their favorite Five Nights at Freddy’s characters. Each playthrough could feature a different animatronic, encouraging repeat usage, longer dwell time, organic sharing and UGC.
    </p>
    <p>
        Our optimized 3D assets helped ensure the scares hit hard – without dropped frames or visual compromises at the key moment.
    </p>

<h2>AR Optimization</h2>
    <p>
        The most demanding part of the process was making cinematic assets behave like lightweight, production‑safe AR content. We focused on:
    </p>

        <li>Reducing polygon counts while preserving key shapes and character detail
        </li>
        <li>Baking lighting and surface detail into textures, then carefully compressing them for mobile
        </li>
        <li>Ensuring animations and materials performed smoothly on mobile devices
        </li>
    </ul>
    <p>
All assets were carefully prepared to integrate seamlessly into Wakefield:XR’s final AR builds across platforms.

        This time, we took on a fun challenge: turning a handcrafted clay character into an interactive Augmented Reality (AR) experience for TikTok and Snapchat. And the cherry on top? The villain of our story, the Marshmallow Boss, was made using actual marshmallows!

    <h2>How We Made It Happen</h2>
    <p>Here’s a quick look at the journey from clay to AR:</p>

            <strong class="pinkTitle">Handcrafting the Character</strong><br>
            We sculpted our hero using children’s clay. While the process was exciting, we learned some valuable lessons along the way—like starting with a T-pose for easier scanning and animation later.
        </li>
        <li>
            <strong class="pinkTitle">3D Scanning with Photogrammetry</strong><br>
            Using photogrammetry (we love Object Capture for iOS!), we transformed our clay model into a highly detailed 3D digital version. Every little detail from the claywork made it into the final model.
        </li>
        <li>
            <strong class="pinkTitle">Model Optimization</strong><br>
            Once scanned, we optimized the 3D model by refining textures, reducing polygons, and prepping it for smooth AR integration.
        </li>
        <li>
            <strong class="pinkTitle">Rigging and Animation</strong><br>
            To make the character come alive, we added a digital skeleton for animation. With playful, expressive movements, the character was ready to jump into action!
        </li>
        <li>
            <strong class="pinkTitle">Creating Game Assets</strong><br>
            We designed a vibrant world to match our character, complete with props, interactive triggers, and environmental elements for a truly immersive experience.
        </li>
        <li>
            <strong class="pinkTitle">Building the AR Game</strong><br>
            Finally, we brought everything together in Lens Studio (Snapchat) and Effect House (TikTok), where we coded the interactions, integrated animations, and fine-tuned the mechanics.

        In this game, players control the clay character by moving their heads left and right to dodge attacks from the fiery Marshmallow Boss. By tapping the screen, the hero strikes back, dealing damage in a thrilling showdown!

        This project perfectly captures what we love to do: combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative technology to create something truly unique. It’s this blend of the physical and digital worlds that drives our passion and inspires us to push boundaries.

<h2>How AR Enhances Packaging</h2>
<p>Augmented Reality can add 3D content directly onto product packaging via a smartphone camera, telling a story in a compelling manner, offering digital incentives, revealing detailed product insights, or suggesting additional items for purchase. The magic begins when a customer scans the packaging—be it through a QR code or a direct link on social media—transforming the package into an interactive canvas. Short videos, animations, and even 3D models spring to life, overlaying the physical box with a rich narrative.</p>

<h2>Usage Scenarios</h2>

<li><b style="color: var(--color-red-dirty);">People see the product on the shelf of a supermarket.</b> There’s a QR code on the side leading directly to the filter (or linktree page) it shows a hint to point the camera at the packaging. Wearable technology offers significant value, particularly due to its ability to track. But how does it function? Currently, augmented reality (AR) in wearable tech mainly involves pointing your smartphone&#8217;s camera at a graphic print, transforming the apparel viewing experience by introducing augmented overlays. These overlays can change colors, play music, and offer various interactive experiences, showcasing the wide range of possibilities with wearable tech.</li>

<li><b style="color: var(--color-red-dirty);">A customer purchases a piece of furniture.</b> The QR code on the package leads to an AR experience triggered by several images of parts of the furniture. There can be up to 5 or 10 images involved depending on the platform &#8211; Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat. The filter guides the customer through an assembling process.</li>

<h2>Brave</h2>

According to the Morphy.vision team, Brave is a powerful social message. Ukrainian viburnum wreath and earrings honor the Ukrainian roots. While the tattoos have phrases that became signature marks of the war.</p>

<h2>Vyshyvanka</h2>

<p>Vyshyvanka is a Ukrainian national dress. The importance of cultural heritage is unparalleled since the beginning of the war. This is why we created a 3D model of vyshyvanka, whose features are only matched by its cultural weight. Our goal was to support and induce a nationwide movement for Ukrainian heritage.</p>

<h2>F THAT’S HOT sauce x Rescue now</h2>
<p>For the Rescue Now charity, we have created an AR filter for Instagram with custom slogans and a logo. It increased the foundation recognition by translating the general mood of the volunteer team.</p>

<p>For F THAT’S HOT, we create a filter with a motion tracker. It animates a product sticker and runs a message: Fiery Heart! When you point a camera at it, a 3D model of a pepper turns into a heart.</p>

<p>In this project, we used a target tracker, one of the types of filters. To put it simply, a filter starts running whenever you are holding a bottle of sauce. The Blendshape technology helped us achieve smooth animations for 3D forms–the pepper becomes a heart with a high-fps grace! We created our Blendshape in Autodesk Maya and then added it to a program that makes AR filters for Instagram–Spark AR. With its help, we set up logic for changing shapes, then added fire and text elements to finalize the filter.”</p>

<p>A blue-yellow blazing pepper turns into a flaming heart, that signals its fiery support for Ukraine. Very symbolic, isn’t it?</p>

<p>The AR market in retail has been booming. However, with the current COVID-19 pandemic, businesses have resorted to remote work and adopted AR technologies. Before the global pandemic, industry research projected worldwide spending on AR in retail at $7,951.2 million by 2023. Luckily, AR is perfect for adopting virtual retail, where all this money is going now. </p>

<p>And we saw businesses started using AR to enhance their brand recognition and advertising campaigns helping the retail market grow rapidly.</p>

<p>In fact, there will be an estimated<a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1098630/global-mobile-augmented-reality-ar-users/"> 2.4 billion</a> mobile AR users in 2023. With only half a billion AR marketing users in 2019, it grew to <a href="https://www.bigcommerce.com/articles/ecommerce/ecommerce-augmented-reality/#augmented-reality-in-ecommerce-statistics-">$1.41 billion</a> in 2020.
